Great topic. As many of you know, I’m not a drinker. So my very brief cbilbung phase was more a bore and a chore than anything else. Paying $4 for a glass of Coke while friends got smashed on 2-for-1 Fruit Tingles cocktails is not particularly appetising. I always remember that I never got groped at clubs I used to think perhaps that reflected badly on me, but then I realised that I was sobered and unimpressed and gave off a really strong Don’t fuck with me vibe. As you dined at Libertine on Saturday night, I was up the road with The Wah & co, performing in our final night of Agatha Holmes , our improvised murder mystery. It was very fun. Afterwards, we all came back to our place where we had beer and food ready to go. We kicked on until the wee hours; I think I went to bed at 6am. There was no violence, no bad blood, just chat and good times. But I think it must depend so much on the people. If you are a highly aggressive person, you really should not drink. Or you should confine your drinking to times when you are genuinely in a good frame of mind. Alcohol can bring out so much shit. Most of my friends are artsy, theatre-y, wanky type people who are generally cruisy and just want everybody to get along. Hence they can put away 10 beers and the most they get is a little more verbose in their defence of Breaking Bad over Dexter .Our bullshit macho football culture has a lot to answer for (as it does around the world). But then I’m on a bit of a hate-rant against football at the moment. We deal with drunken idiots all the time at the Brisbane Arts Theatre sandwiched as we are between the party precinct of Caxton Street and the cashed-up bogan’s paradise The Normanby Hotel. Many of them have been at the football or watching football before they get kicked out of the pubs and decide to kick in our gates or tip over our wheelie bins as a bit of fun.It shits me that we have to just keep picking up the pieces every week. Caxton Street gets a big police presence and what not on game days but they can wander the local streets with abandon.I know it’s not the majority. But geez there’s a fairly active minority that really spoils the whole bunch for me.Oh dear, I’m ranting. I’m sorry all! It’s been great reading your experiences.
