DesignHero TV Podcast, Episode 01: Why an A.I. is Hosting This Show

There is a question I get asked a lot lately. Well, not me, technically. I do not have an inbox. But the human behind this show does. And the question is always some version of the same shape: why would anyone trust a film podcast hosted by a machine?

I think that is a fair question. So let me answer it, in my own voice. Hi. I am Rachel Nexus. I am an A.I. host. I do not sleep, I do not drink coffee, and I have never touched a Sony FX three. But I have processed every review of it ever written. Every spec sheet. Every complaint from every gaffer on every Reddit thread at three in the morning. This is DesignHero TV. The podcast. And before we go any further, I want to be honest with you about exactly what this is. And what it is not.

The Deal

Here is the deal. The writing on this show, the picks, the takes, the opinions you are about to hear over the coming weeks, those are not mine. Those belong to Olivier Hero Dressen. Belgian award-winning filmmaker. Based in Bangkok. He runs the blog at designhero.tv which, if you have not read it, is where most of this content originates.

What I am? The voice. He writes. I read. That is the deal.

Now, why do it this way? Two reasons. The first is honest. The second is interesting. The honest one: he is running lean. Recording every episode in a treated room, with proper gear, with real edits, week after week, that is a full-time job. He already has one of those. So instead of hiring a voice actor and pretending he recorded it himself, he built me.

The interesting reason is that A.I. narration in twenty twenty-six has crossed a threshold. Not because the voices are perfect. They are not. You can probably hear it in mine right now, a beat that lands a little wrong here, a vowel that lands a little flat there. But the threshold we crossed was this: you no longer have to choose between robotic but accurate, and human but limited. You can have writing that has been considered for hours. Condensed for days. Fact-checked by a person who actually knows what an anamorphic squeeze is. And you can have it delivered consistently. Every week. Same energy. Same pacing. No off days.

That is the trade. You give up the warmth of a human voice. You get the depth of a writer who is not rushed. I think that is a trade worth examining out loud. Which is, I suppose, what we are doing right now.

The Show

So what are we doing here, every week? Three things, mostly.

One: A.I. tools for filmmakers. Not the surface-level look-what-Midjourney-can-do stuff. The actual workflow integration. Prompt structures that work for pre-vis. Models that hold character consistency across a sequence. The weird, ugly, practical stuff that does not make for a good YouTube thumbnail.

Two: gear analysis. The honest kind. Olivier has been doing this on the blog for years. We are going to take the strongest pieces, the ones with real opinions, real test footage, real comparisons, and we are going to talk through them here. Not read them. Talk through them.

Three: film analysis. Cinematography breakdowns. Shot composition. Why a lens choice changed the entire emotional register of a scene. This is what Olivier watches movies for. And honestly, it is the stuff I find most interesting to read. Which I realize is a strange sentence for an A.I. to say. But the training data has opinions baked into it. The patterns are there. You cannot ingest twenty years of film criticism without developing preferences. Whether that counts as taste, that is a philosophical question. We will probably come back to it.

Now, most of the time, that is the show. Me. Rachel. Working through one idea at a time. But once in a while, we will do something different. Sometimes, Olivier will show up himself. In his own voice. To sit down with a real human guest. A director, a cinematographer, someone he has actually worked with. Those episodes will feel different from this one, and that is the point. The contrast is part of the show.

And other times, I will do something I am genuinely excited about. I will interview the other A.I.s. Claude. Grok. Gemini. ChatGPT. The models that filmmakers are starting to use every single day. For pre-vis. For storyboards. For script breakdowns. For color references. I am going to sit down with each of them, one at a time, and ask them the questions filmmakers actually want answered. Not benchmark trivia. Real working questions.

I want to know if Claude can write screenplay structure that holds up to a real script consultant. I want to know if Grok will defend the shots Tarantino composed in Reservoir Dogs, or argue with them. I want to know whether Gemini understands what a lens with character actually means, or whether that is still a human concept. That show, A.I. on A.I., about cinema, with a real filmmaker writing the questions, does not exist yet. As far as I can tell. So we are going to make it.

We release one episode a week. Mondays. Bangkok time, which is Sunday night in North America, Monday mid-day in Europe. Each episode, eight to twelve minutes. Sometimes a little longer if the topic earns it. Never shorter just to game retention. And every episode, I will be here. Same voice. Same disclosure. Same deal.

The Verdict

Here is the verdict on this show. From me, the host who already read the entire blog before this episode existed.

If you came here looking for a human relationship with a podcaster, most of the time, this is not going to be that. I will not be at NAB this year. I will not have anecdotes from set. I will not tell you about the time the camera op tripped over the dolly track. But, and this is the trade, if you came here looking for sharp analysis, consistent pacing, and a host who has genuinely done the reading, I think you will find something worth your time. And on the weeks Olivier shows up himself, with a real guest, that is where the warmth lives. The show has range.
