Award-Winning Film “She Is So Perfect”: A Social Commentary.

Our short movie She Is So Perfect just won its third award in New York as “Best of Asian Continent,” adding to its previous wins for “Best Comedy” and “Best Direction. We thought it was the perfect time to share more about our award-winning film “She is So Perfect.”

Based on an original story by Camilla Wang, “She Is So Perfect” follows the story of Eva, a seemingly perfect girl in Shanghai, and the narrator’s obsession with her. But as the story unfolds, the audience realizes that things aren’t always as they seem.

This unique and quirky story is told from the perspective of an insecure Chinese youngster and highlights the harmful effects of constantly comparing one’s life to the constructed lives of those we see online.

inside the psyche of a young Chinese women

This film is a social commentary that delves into the psyche of young Chinese women, specifically those living in Shanghai. The story was written by Camilla Wang in collaboration with Chinese students from Istituto Marangoni Shanghai, providing a unique insight and perspective.

As a filmmaker living in China for 9 years, I was deeply inspired by this story and excited to share my vision of China. I added a surprising twist to the ending, making the film more engaging.

The film was co-produced with the Istituto Marangoni in Shanghai, and most of the crew were students, primarily Chinese girls. The post-production and gaffer were Russian and French, bringing a diverse perspective to the film.

An Exploration of Envy and Jealousy in the Digital Age

We hope our audience will also be inspired and passionate about this film. Our award-winning film “She is So Perfect” is the third official release for our newly formed Studio Supreme Films, a company dedicated to creating thought-provoking and inspiring movies.

Interview by Mathew Offolo for Wildsound

SHE IS SO PERFECT was the winner of BEST DIRECTION at the July 2022 LA Feedback Film Festival; here is a direct transcript of the interview.

1. What motivated you to make this film?

First of all, we wanted to repeat thanks for giving us this best-directing award; we really appreciate that!

Camilla Wang and I are doing a masterclass in a renowned International Fashion school in Shanghai from Milano, “Istituto Marangoni.”

With our students, we are doing films related to Fashion; that’s where Camilla had this idea of telling that specific story from a young woman’s perspective in Shanghai.

She wrote the entire story with a little twist for the ending on my side, and with the help of our students, we produced and put this film together.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?

Probably a month in total, it took only one day to shoot, and I was directing and doing the cinematography simultaneously to move quicker on set.

3. How would you describe your film in two words!?

Teenager fantasy.

4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?

Somehow it took us a while to put the color together; I worked first on it in DaVinci Resolve (We own a grading station) then I tried a few other colorists in Shanghai without success.

Finally, I found another colorist that did a pass into it and sent me back the files. In the end, I did a compilation of our best grades, so that’s why we shared credit on that part.

Our previous film, “The Passport,” was graded by the same Colorist as Oscar Nominated film, “Bullhead,” so we didn’t really suffer that same issue for the previous movie. I wish this type of scenario would happen all the time.

But since our budget was entirely limited on She is So Perfect, we had to do it ourselves.

5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?

It’s always an immense gift to see and hear the audience’s reaction; unlike musicians, with filmmaking, we don’t really have an immediate response to our work.

Your festival is one of my favorites because you allow us Independent filmmakers to better understand how our work is perceived.

6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?

Since I was a kid, I have been painting, drawing comics, then later on doing exhibitions with my work; as soon as I started to do animated films, I fell in love with the media since it mixes up everything I like.

7. What film have you seen the most in your life?

Hard to say; I watch at least a movie a day, but Back to the future, Memento, and Blade Runner are some of those I like to revisit.

I will also plug in my Pinterest page dedicated to movies I like. Our page is also followed by Netflix, by the way.

8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?

It’s always great to have leads with executives and people that could eventually push our future projects forward, but I am not sure how that could be implemented into your festival.

But honestly, again, that’s not really the purpose of why we are sending our materials to your festival.

9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How have your experiences been working on the festival platform site?

Excellent, honestly, close to a perfect experience.

10. What is your favorite meal?

Not my perfect meal, but being away from traveling out of China since COVID.

So I do miss a good In and Out Burger in Los Angeles.

11. What is next for you? A new film?

I do seek management and partnership to help us move forward to directing feature films or exciting shows. Two close calls with extensive management in Los Angeles involved in a big international franchise. Nothing has been signed off yet, so I am still looking for that right partnership and hopefully fulfill that big dream of mine soon.

I love filmmaking, and we created a website to share our film-related projects http://www.studiosupremefilms.com. We still have 4 other shorts in work, so we will probably soon close to 7 shorts on this platform.

We also have been working on producing motion graphics content for projects involving Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, and other comedians. I can’t really say more about it right now. Still, I look forward to seeing that project aired sometime soon.

For the rest, I am still seeking to do the feature version of The Passport. So I am looking for the perfect writer to co-write that project with me!
